When Thiago Alcantara decided to leave FC Barcelona and join Bayern Munich with the coach that gave him his professional debut, Pep Guardiola, a number of people were left scratching their heads as to why he would spurn the likes of Manchester United. After all, there was no way he was going to see significant playing time in the Bayern midfield given the number of players already there, right?
Well, after suffering an ankle injury that saw him miss several months, Thiago has returned and has shown that despite what may seem like a crowded midfield, his midfield versatility has proven to be his greatest asset. Along with his wonderful technical skill, the 22-year old is beginning to show Bayern fans and doubters of his move that his addition has doing nothing to negatively affect the balance in Bayern’s midfield or his playing time.
Alcantara e has played in different positions along the Bayern midfield, and has done so without Bayern feeling the loss of a player like Arjen Robben. Alcantara has played anywhere from the false no. 9 position to his preferred advanced central midfield role, to a playmaking withdrawn central midfield position which sees him being further away from the forward line.
Independent of where he has been asked to play, Thiago has shown himself to be the player that many thought he is and has put in top notch efforts in each of his 11 appearances across all competitions so far in the 2013-14 season. He has proved to be a player who is in the right frame of mind to adapt to the position he is asked to play. In a recent interview, he stated that he was willing to play anywhere on the field because he likes playing futbol that much.
All this has played into him showing that his signing was an astute one which is slowly paying off for both the player and the club.
