5 Players Who Could Join Chelsea in 2014
The January transfer window is generally a way for troubled teams to pick up necessary reinforcements for the second half of the season. All teams participating in the January transfer market will be looking for players who can make an immediate impact.
Usually, bigger names are left for the summer, but with the top four only separated by the slimmest of margins, a few teams are looking to make a splash in the market to spur on the rest of their season. Many hope that they can distance themselves from the pack with a few key signings.
Chelsea, despite beating Liverpool 2-1 and sitting in third in the Premier League, are looking to the transfer market for some answers to a few gaps in their squad.
It may be vexing to some that a team as loaded as Chelsea will be looking to bring in more talent, but the plethora of attacking players has shrouded the glaring need for defensive reinforcements. Likewise, the defensive midfield area has been patchwork at times this season, with injuries and formation changes causing Jose Mourinho to constantly tinker with positioning.
The backline is also in much need of reinforcements. Although Mourinho has figured out his favored lineup, left-back Cesar Azpilicueta is truly a right-back and David Luiz is the only game-tested backup in the center.
The striker position has been the most polarized area of need for Chelsea, as none of the available three have made the spot their own. All are big-name players who should be dominating up front, yet as it is, the management need to bring in someone who can take the goal scoring pressure off the midfield.
Chelsea have been doing well this season without playing lights out. Here are five players that could push the Blues over the edge.

5. Fredy Guarin
The Inter Milan midfielder has been linked to the Blues for a while now, though a strong performance in the Milan derby has seen his current club keen to hold on to him.
The battler is wanted by Chelsea as a midfield reinforcement, and the London club are willing to leverage Demba Ba in hopes of speeding up negotiations.
4. Jackson Martinez
The next Colombian on this list has been heavily linked to a Premier League switch in January, and Chelsea are at the top of the list for his signature.
The FC Porto striker has become a massive talent in Portugal, but the fact that he is cup-tied in the Champions League is a big smear on his CV as the Blues are in immediate need of goals in all competitions.
3. Xabi Alonso
Reports are picking up again of Chelsea monitoring the Spanish international whose contract is set to expire next summer and could be reunited with Mourinho on a free transfer.
While Xabi Alonso is 32-years old, his class is unquestioned and he would be an valuable asset in terms of experience and depth in the defensive midfield area.
2. Diego Costa
Diego Costa has caught fire this season for Atletico Madrid and is leading all scorers in La Liga.
Chelsea have been interested in his services, but reports have surfaced that a swap deal for Thibaut Courtois is the only way to land his signature. That is a heavy price to pay, even for a top-quality striker.
1. Luke Shaw
The Southampton left back is touted as the heir apparent to Ashely Cole in the England squad and is now looking to be his long-term replacement at Chelsea.
Shaw has been a fan of Chelsea since he was little, but will only make the switch to west London if he is guaranteed a starting spot. Chelsea will be happy to oblige.
