Premiership Midseason Review: Newcastle United

At the beginning of the season, I had written down my Premier League predictions. Now with 19 games played, let’s look at Newcastle United and see how they’ve done. Going into the season, I thought that the owner may have been angling to get a new manager in, but whether that was right or not, the start they had after the first game has certainly made it very hard to do.

Here’s what I wrote prior to the season:

Pardew will be at war with Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear for the players he wants … Ashley tried this before with Dennis Wise when Kevin Keegan was manager, and it resulted in Keegan walking away and then suing. Surely Ashley hasn’t made that same mistake again has he?

Last January, a whole bunch of Frenchman joined Newcastle and they have more or less proven their worth this season. I am not sure if this window will be as busy for Alan Pardew and I am still not sure how much money is available to him anyway. I am still not convinced the Ashley/Kinnear duo are not circling Pardew waiting for a mistake, but they haven’t had anything to grab onto as of yet.

They are currently in eighth and I had predicted a 13th place finish. They are currently 13 points ahead of the 13th-placed side and only three from the last Champions League spot. Still having to go play away against three of the current top five means that they will be closer to my prediction come season’s end than they will be in contention for Champions League.
