Why The Seattle Sounders Need To Switch To A 4-3-3 From A Diamond Formation
The Seattle Sounders are a good soccer club that seem to get better and better ever single year. In fact, they are getting closer to the Conference finals each time they get there. However, the do seem to fall short right when it counts the most.
They play with a 4-4-2 Diamond formation, where there are four defenders, one defensive midfielder, two wing midfielders, an attacking midfielder and two strikers to bull doze the attack. This is pretty on paper and even at times during the games, but there is always the lack of help when it comes to defending and even attacking. There are gaps all over the field and the players are forced to play the ball wide a bit more than they would like to.
Therefore, the time has come for them to think about switching to a traditional or an attacking 4-3-3 formation. Why? It’s simple — four defenders, three central midfielders, and three attackers with two guys lining up on either wing with the lone striker being trusted to hold the ball up and score whenever he can.
Now, the problem with the 4-3-3 is that there are not enough midfielders to really generate a successful attack when it comes to playing against disciplined teams. However, Seattle is a team that has an energizer bunny in DeAndre Yedlin, who makes runs up the right flank all night long. If the left-back can match that, the midfielders, as well as wingers, can have all the help in the world to dominate possession and create attacking chances consistently.
Kenny Cooper is a big striker who can play as a target man or he can dribble to create his own chances. This is why the 4-3-3 would benefit him greatly, as he will be the main guy when it comes to scoring goals. Clint Dempsey can play behind him, to his right, or to his left, which means that he will have an experienced player who can make him even better as a teammate and scorer.
The Sounders have some of the best fans in the country, as they are truly passionate about their sports, with soccer being one of the main attractions. Therefore, instead of playing it safe with a Diamond or a 4-2-3-1, they should take chances with a 4-3-3 to give themselves and their fans a chance at continuous excitement. If there is any team in this league that can make this work on a weekly basis, it is certainly them, and of course, the reigning MLS Cup champs, Sporting KC.
