Many experts were expecting Manchester United to make a move during the January Transfer Window, but the one announced in recent days is clearly not what the fans — or the media — wanted in the first place.
With the team struggling all over the pitch and having a disappointing season so far, many thought United would use this period to bolster the team with a marquee signing. Instead they have announced that midfielder Anderson will be loaned to Fiorentina for the reminder of the season.
While it’s true that this was a move both the team and the player needed – as the Brazilian hasn’t been productive in the last years for the team – it’s hard to find any sense behind it. The Red Devils don’t have much depth in their midfield, and losing a player is never a good sign — especially if adding a replacement isn’t in the cards.
Marouane Fellaini hasn’t been the expected reinforcement, Michael Carrick has battled with injuries and Tom Cleverley can’t handle the center of the pitch all by himself. Anderson’s loss only depletes the midfield line even more, and while the former FC Porto star should thrive at the Serie A, Manchester United would’ve been better off keeping him if they weren’t thinking of adding another midfielder.
It’s puzzling to say the least, but as it has been the case with Manchester United this season, we just can’t be surprised anymore. David Moyes hasn’t been able to adjust to life at Old Trafford, and this can only be considered as another strange move The Scot has made this year.
