Atletico Madrid: Juanfran Mishap Ruins Rather Disciplined Home Performance
Atletico Madrid hosted Sevilla in their La Liga fixture earlier today fully aware of the fact that if they won, they would jump ahead of league-leading Barcelona by two points. However, things did not go according to plan as one little mistake cost them dearly.
Captain and starting right-back Juanfran dragged on the shirt of Carlos Bacca inside the area when he had no chance of getting to the ball. Therefore, the referee immediately blew the whistle then pointed to the penalty spot. Up stepped captain Ivan Rakitic who buried it past Thibaut Courtois to cancel out David Villa’s first half strike.
This goes to show us all that losing concentration for a single second or allowing ourselves to grow frustrated can ruin a perfectly good game plan. A penalty kick is the reason why Atletico is tied with Barca on 51 points but behind them on goal differential. This seems like nothing short of bad luck in addition to a momentary lapse of judgement.
Even with the draw, one of the players seemed quite happy with the point, Filipe Luis. Regardless, Atletico still sit in second, just one point ahead of city rival Real Madrid who thrashed Real Betis on the road by a score of 5-0. Basically, these clubs (along with Barca) truly are leading a three-way race to the La Liga title. The beauty of it is the fact that all three are more than capable of winning it all. It will be very exciting to see who comes out on top.
