Atlante went into their game against Atlas in Week 3 action of the Liga MX Clausura 2014 season knowing that in many ways the team was playing for its future in the first division. They entered the game eight points behind their Guadalajara based rivals with both teams having won just a single point in their first two games of the campaign. In addition, Atlante would be playing its first game under new coach Pablo Marini who was brought in to save the team from relegation.
In what was a tight, cautious game between two teams who were more afraid of losing the game as opposed to trying to win it, Atlante would end up winning 1-0 in a result that sees them now only five points off Atlas, the next closest rival in the relegation zone battle. In a game where Atlante was playing for basically their future in the first division, it is only appropriate that the man who scored the game-winner take this week’s honors as being the player of the week.
The goal scorer and man who probably saved Atlante’s first division future is Narciso Mina. Mina came over during the offseason with the label of having been a bust in his two seasons with Club America. Mina was considered expendable long before Club America lost the Apertura 2013 playoff final to Leon, but his performance in the second leg of said final sealed his fate and convinced many that he was a bust of a signing.
In the first three games of the Clausura 2014 season, Mina has already scored two goals with his game-winner on Saturday being one that could ultimately prove to be the most important he will score ever in his career. If Mina can continue to contribute with decisive and important goals, maybe he will show why he was at one point the top goal scorer in the Ecuadorian first division. For this goal this past weekend, he earns player of the week honors for Clausura 2014 Week 3 action.
