Argentinean midfielder Agustin Pelletieri is reportedly close to joining MLS after ending his contract with Racing Club in his native country, and while the initial reports indicated that the playmaker was close to joining the Portland Timbers, the reality is that the 31-year-old might be headed elsewhere.
The central midfielder is reportedly close to join Chivas USA as their new head coach Wilmer Cabrera is keen to add more experience to the team. The American affiliate of Chivas Guadalajara has already landed Alfredo Bautista, and the arrival of Pelletieri is another excellent move looking towards the 2014 season.
The move hasn’t been confirmed by either party yet but if it’s confirmed, then Pelletieri has the potential to be one of the best signings of this offseason.
The team desperately needs help in the center of the pitch since the only true central midfielders in the squad are Marky Delgado and Oswaldo Minda. Pelletieri can add experience and a huge presence there, where he can operate as a defensive specialist. He also has enough quality to push forward when needed.
Head coach Cabrera already said in his presentation that the intention is “to add experienced players that can adjust easily to the pace of MLS” and that the sooner they arrive, the better for the team. It remains to be seen if Pelletieri fits the mold, but based on what he has done throughout his career, he has all the tools to make an instant impact in the U.S.
