It is only the first leg of the round for these two clubs, but Atletico Madrid already has one foot in the next round. A beautiful header from Diego Costa was able to put Atletico ahead of AC Milan in their Champions League match. This was Costa’s fifth goal in four Champions League appearances, and it served as a reminder that Atletico is not a club that will go down easy.
Not only is Atletico the underdog for this round, but they also played at AC Milan’s home. Can you imagine how hard it is to win? Atletico also has reason to lack confidence as they recently lost 3-0 to Real Madrid and had been kicked out of the Copa del Rey. Not something they could be proud of. The team took today’s match as an opportunity to remind other clubs that La Liga has three top clubs now.
It was a physical match as expected, and six yellow cards were handed out. The lone goal scorer received one himself after a nasty foul, but a mere 14 minutes later, he was making his club victorious. He needs to be careful in the next match. The club needs him eligible so he can continue scoring goals. Milan needs to start studying Costa and try to figure out how to stop him. It will not be an easy task.
The round is far from over and Milan still has a fair chance. Atletico will face Milan in the second leg of the round on Mar. 11.
