Despite the fact that Chivas USA has been the laughing stock of the MLS in the last four seasons – finishing eighth and ninth twice in the Western Conference – things unfortunately don't seem to be changing this season.

The California-based team doesn’t have many star players coming into the 2014 season, and a last place finish seems to be a realistic expectation once again, as they don’t appear to be ready to compete properly with the rest of the league. However, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have players who could make an impact this year.

If there’s one thing that Chivas USA can do on the pitch, it is to add experience thanks to several veterans that they have on the squad, and they are expected to carry the squad against tougher rivals. The experience seems to be key for Chivas in what seems like a tough season and the franchise needs these players to perform according to expectations.

Not everything is bad for the team though. They have a few players that could be considered building blocks, and they also made a few solid additions that could start changing the course of the franchise if they pan out. While a deep playoff run seems highly unlikely, Chivas could turn a few heads if things click properly early in the season.

In order for that to happen, five players need to perform at their best. Without further ado, read on to find out who are the ones expected to carry Chivas USA this season.

Former Mexican international Alfredo Bautista arrived this season and although he’s unlikely to make a huge impact due to his age and his skill set, he will still be a key player for Chivas simply because he will likely become the go-to player on offense when things get complicated.

4. Oswaldo Minda

The Ecuador international is one of the most important players of the team and he’s also one of the most experienced players in the squad, as he’s getting closer to participating in the World Cup with his country. Oswaldo Minda gives Chivas technique and talent in the middle of the pitch and he will likely be the one managing the tempo on the offensive side of the ball.

3. Tony Lochhead

Tony Lochhead is the most experienced defender in the squad and he will be the one likely in charge to organize the defense. He is also an aerial threat on offense and he has enough ability to be a game changer on the backline.

2. Agustin Pelletieri

Much like Minda is the key player on the offensive midfield, Agustin Pelletieri is slated to be the one doing the same thing on the defensive side of the ball. The Argentinean midfielder has plenty of experience in some of the top teams in his native country, and Chivas is counting on him to make an immediate impact with the squad.

1. Mauro Rosales

The former Ajax star will be the most important player for Chivas this season and the majority of the team’s offensive chances will likely to through his feet. He has enough talent to be one of the best wingers in the MLS and since Chivas has an important lack of talent on the squad, Mauro Rosales will be asked to lead the team’s offense early on in the year.
