With Eddie Johnson recently signing his Designated Player (DP) contract with D.C. United, everyone is starting to wonder when Mike Magee will sign his with Chicago Fire. They were both reported to be on the verge of signing, but only Johnson has actually done so.
Magee is more than deserving of a DP contract. He was league MVP last season and continues to be one of the best forwards in the league. He scored 21 times in his 31 appearances last season. That is incredible for any forward. He is on his way to being one of the top forwards in the league alongside Chris Wondolowski and Landon Donovan. He still has a way to go, but he is definitely one of the top players in the league.
It was rumored that Magee didn’t join Chicago at the beginning of preseason training because he was holding out in hopes of signing the new contract. Magee denied those claims, saying he had personal matter to attend to, but it was reported that he returned to the club in good faith; he hopes to get a his DP contract soon.
Chicago has to sign Magee as a DP. He is an incredible player, and it will be the only way to keep him. He wanted to play for Chicago because he wanted to return home. During the Los Angeles Galaxy trade with Robbie Rogers, Magee volunteered to be traded to Chicago and they gladly accepted the trade. Both the player and club are happy, but I don’t think they can keep him for very long if they don’t give him a raise and sign him as a DP.
