MLS: Top Week 1 Goals

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Opening weekend in MLS featured 26 goals, so there were plenty of choices for the top scores of the week. Chad Barrett scored a dramatic stoppage time goal in Seattle while Vancouver and Houston tallied four times. A lot of the stars you might expect to see on the score sheet were absent, and it was an MLS newcomer who stole the spotlight in the opening week.

5. Bobby Burling - Chivas USA

Chivas USA needed a good start more than any team in the league with all the drama surrounding the club. A good header is always fun to watch, and the technique shown by Bobby Burling was classic. He spotted the corner and went after it, snapping a header down between two players for the game-winner.

4. Mauro Diaz - FC Dallas

As the announcer said as Mauro Diaz was stepping to this free kick, players often practice from this distance. However, getting it over the wall and back down is a skill, and the keeper never had a chance. This would also be the game-winner as Dallas defeated Montreal.

3. Will Bruin - Houston Dynamo

Will Bruin had a bad end to the 2013 season and only had one goal in the preseason. Scoring only a couple minutes into the season off his own volley should be a good confidence booster. Bruin would add another goal and an assist in the Houston blowout win.

2. Quincy Amarikwa - Chicago Fire

Chivas may have won the match, but Quincy Amarikwa equalized in the second half to add to a dramatic last 45 minutes. He collects on a good first touch and fends off the opponent. That shot was pretty perfect.

1. Sebastian Fernandez - Vancouver Whitecaps

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have been the surprise of week one with a 4-1 win over New York. The second goal was a good team play between Kenny Miller, Darren Mattocks and Sebastian Fernandez. Fernandez finishes with a great strike slicing away from the keeper.
