Manchester United Need To Upgrade 5 Positions In The Transfer Market

As Manchester United enter the final months of what has been a torrid season for them, the focus will soon turn to who they will buy in the summer transfer market. United clearly need to improve for next season and quite a few signings will be expected in an attempt to boost the soon-to-be former champions. Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata were signed in the last six months or so, but clearly those signings alone are nowhere near enough.

Rafael can certainly have his good days when he plays well, but when he has his bad days they are ridiculously bad. He accumulates red and yellow cards at an alarming rate and a penalty is never too far away for the opposition. United could generally get by with Rafael at right-back but they could no doubt improve on him too.

Traditionally, Manchester United have always had great wingers. George Best, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo all thrilled the Old Trafford crowd during their time at the club. That cannot be said anymore, though. Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Nani all flatter to deceive and United need a bigger threat from the flanks for next season.

Nemanja Vidic has been a fantastic player for Manchester United during his time at the club. He will depart in the summer to join Inter Milan and leave United with a gap to fill. Rio Ferdinand is also coming towards the end and Moyes will need another centre-back to join in the summer. Preferably a top class player who can immediately make the starting lineup for United and improve the team straight away.

Patrice Evra is another player who has been great for the club over the years. He is clearly not the same player now as he was when he was younger though and Moyes will no doubt be looking for a replacement in the summer. The writing was on the wall last summer when Moyes, unsuccessfully, tried to buy Leighton Baines from Everton and this summer should see another attempt to replace Evra.

How many years have United been crying out for a quality central midfielder? Too many. Marouane Fellaini doesn't seem to have settled and even if he does sometime soon, United will still need another quality player in that position. It's quite incredible that with such a lack of class in such an important position, Sir Alex Ferguson managed to win so many trophies in recent years. Now Ferguson has gone, the inadequacy shows up more than ever.
