This MLS match was probably one of the more boring games on paper. However, we already know that these games are played on the field. The paper was once again proven wrong as both sides fought valiantly for the 1-1 draw.
Chivas USA hosted a high-flying Vancouver Whitecaps side that wanted to go for a perfect 2-0 record against a rather feisty home side that gave them everything they had. Erick Torres was the hero as he scored the only goal in the first half to put his side up 1-0. The second half brought about the equalizer through Kekuta Manneh under 10 minutes from time.
Chivas did receive some harsh punishment from the referee just 13 minutes in as Agustin Pelletieri was ejected for a foul that did not warrant that punishment. Regardless, they held firm and began to fill in more holes, which made it quite difficult for Vancouver to create chances. Therefore, the 1-1 draw made the most sense for both sides.
The issue with Vancouver is that at home, they can play and run for days. On the road, they realize that they have to rely on themselves and the guidance of their coach — there is no 12th man. They need to create a bit more chemistry and get their faster players such as Darren Mattocks and scorers like Kenny Miller more involved. They need to lead their team in the final third like they did last week in the huge 4-1 victory over NY in the season opener.
Chivas are showing that they can be a formidable force at home this season. Their ability to back up each other has been nothing short of admirable. In addition, Torres is quickly becoming their star striker as he has been saving them time and time again with some smart goals.
