As the countdown continues to the World Cup in Brazil, there are five important dates that will shape the USMNT's chances. Some of these days require roster releases, while others are matches that will give Jurgen Klinsmann another chance to fine tune his team. There will be other milestones along the way, but these dates are the most important to gauge the USMNT squad.

The first date will be a friendly against rival Mexico in Arizona. The crowd could be be just as much in favor of Mexico as the U.S. For some players, this will be the last chance to impress in order to make the roster for the World Cup. Many MLS players should be on the roster as they vie for starting spots in Brazil.

The 30-man roster that must be released at least 30 days prior to the opening match of the World Cup is not binding, but it will give players and fans an idea of Jurgen Klinsmann's priorities. It will also eliminate fringe players who have been the biggest part of the discussion for fans. There could still be changes with injuries, but this roster will be important moving forward.

World Cup training will begin on the west coast on or around May 14, although clubs do not officially have to release players until almost two weeks later. Most players on the preliminary roster should be in camp at this time, trying to show why they belong on the final roster.

The send-off series games will allow the very last tweaks to be made before heading to Brazil. The USMNT will play a match at Candlestick Park on May 27 against Azerbaijan before heading to Red Bull Arena and Everbank Field to finish off the series of matches.

Multiple reports have the USMNT departing for their training ground in Sao Paulo the day after the match in Jacksonville. After traveling over 3,000 miles during the send-off series, the team will travel more than 4,000 more to get to Sao Paulo. Then, the rigorous travel schedule of the World Cup will kick in, so recovery after the Jacksonville match is key.
