Top 5 MLS MVP Candidates of Week 3

MLS Week 3: Top 5 MLS MVPs

Top 5 MLS MVP
Denny Medley - USA TODAY Sports

I know it's early, but I think some players are already starting to show how valuable they are to their clubs. Most clubs have now played at least two matches and in those matches, some players are shining through as the best. Last year's MVP finalists have not started the season off as great ad they ended it, but there is still time.

These are the five players I think are off to good starts if they hope to win the MLS MVP Award.

5. Joao Plata

Joao Plata Week 3 MLS MVP

Joao Plata may be short is stature, but he is not short in talent. He has scored two goals for Real Salt Lake, one of which was during its first match of the season; he also has two assists under his belt. Sadly, he's suffered a hamstring injury, and it will be three weeks until he can continue his reign for his club.

4. Mauro Rosales

4. Mauro Rosales

Mauro Rosales Week 3 MLS MVP

Mauro Rosales is a strong midfielder for Chivas USA, and I think he's one of the reasons this club has had such a good start to the season. I'd never think an MLS MVP could come out of Chivas, but Rosales is currently leading the league in assists. I think if he keeps this up, he's a prime candidate.

3. Will Bruin

3. Will Bruin

Will Bruin Week 3 MLS MVP

Will Bruin has always been an a great player, but I don't think he's ever been as impressive as he is right now. He's a leading goalscorer with three goals, and on a club like Houston Dynamo, I think he'll only keep adding to the tally. If he continues to play this hard, I can easily see him becoming an MLS MVP finalist.

2. Nick Rimando

Nick Rimando Week 3 MLS MVP

If you watched the Los Angeles Galaxy season opener, you know it wasn't just Galaxy's poor play that led to their lost, but Nick Rimando's amazing skills in the net. He continued his strong defense, as he is currently leading the league in saves with 16. If his time out for the World Cup doesn't stop him, he is sure to be at the very least an MLS MVP finalist.

1. Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe Week 3 MLS MVP

Jermain Defoe is the player to watch this season. He has exceeded all expectations in just the first few matches of the season, and I suspect he will not be cooling off anytime soon. He has given clubs a reason to fear Toronto FC, and I think he's the best candidate for MLS MVP.
