It has been reported that Chelsea FC are already working on obtaining Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid this summer. Costa signed a multi-year contract expansion with Atletico last September; so, if the Blues want him in their lineup, it won’t be without a hefty buyout. I think he is definitely worth it, but I don’t think Atletico should let him go just yet.
Costa is Atletico’s top scorer this season, and he has scored twice as many goals as the other top scorers David Villa and Raul Garcia. I think he is the reason Atletico are able to stay at the top of La Liga table with powerhouse Spanish clubs Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Villa was an excellent transfer for Atletico, but he is prone to injuries, which is something 25-year-old Costa isn’t as susceptible to.
It also cannot be forgotten that Atletico have also made it to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, and Costa has scored seven of the goals that helped them get there. He is the strong player and leader his club needs. Even the Spanish National Team recognized the talent Costa has and gave him a call-up after he switched allegiances. He is definitely a valuable player to Atletico and for them to sell him to Chelsea would be a terrible idea.
He will succeed in any club that gives him a chance, but I think Atletico are the club that needs him at the moment. It is still early in his career, and he still has time to move up.
