Club Atletico Madrid had Diego Costa and Koke to thank for their 2-1 victory at Athletic Bilbao, who scored first through their gem, Iker Muniain.

With this victory, Atletico are back on top of La Liga with 76 points, just one ahead of Barcelona with 75. Currently, Real Madrid are playing Rayo Vallecano, so if they win, they will only be two behind Barca and three behind the former. This race will not let up as all three of these big sides are vying for the Spanish league title.

Today’s match was a tough one for Atletico as their hosts never seemed to let up, but the two goals they scored were just enough to earn all three points. The type of soccer that was played was as rough and tough as expected, but the away side used their slightly larger star power to win it all.

Costa is proving to be the star striker that he is as he continues to score the important game-winning goals for his club. Today it was Koke who scored the second, but Costa scored the ever so important equalizer in a stadium where not too many big clubs are successful.

The home side played in a 4-1-4-1 whereas the visitors played in their usual 4-4-2 holding with the wide players constantly pressing high and hard to threaten the opposing frame. Both formations paid dividends for their clubs, but the skill, power and determination of the away side prevailed.

The fact that Atletico are ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid this late into the season is remarkable. Some would say that this is supposed to be a two-way race between the last two mentioned since that is how it has been for the past many years. Now that Atletico have come this far, it will take a tremendous amount of character to keep this belief and form rolling.
