Neymar may have won the controversial penalty, but like last week, Leo Messi scored from the spot which decided the match for Barcelona in their 1-0 victory at RCD Espanyol.
Barcelona were their usual selves with their dominant 4-3-3 attacking formation as they created chance after chance, but did not have the extra swagger they needed to score from open play. Their opponents weren’t too shabby themselves, but the defense held up firm as usual.
The only goal of the match arrived in the second half when the ball was crossed towards Neymar on the inside left of the 18, but the ball struck his arm and then a defender’s, which would lead to the penalty kick. While questionable, the play decided the outcome of the match.
Now, Barca sit alone on top of the league with 75 points while they wait to see what happens with Atletico Madrid after their game in Bilbao. If they are to win, they jump back up top with 76. If they tie or lose, they sit behind Barcelona. This will be a nice build-up to their final match day when they face off at the Camp Nou, a game that could potentially decide this season’s La Liga champion.
Messi has been in strong form since he full recovery from injury. Last week’s hat trick at Real Madrid was just the tip of the iceberg as he has scored once in each of the two games after that classic derby. If he can be on top of his form, the team could easily defend their league title with Neymar also playing well.
