The power, speed, strength, determination and championship mentality of Real Salt Lake proved to be way too much for Toronto FC who were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline, thus, earning their first loss of the season.
Alvaro Saborio hit a double while Luis Gil scored one in between for the hosts to hand the Canadian side their first loss of the season. This should be seen as a rude awakening for Michael Bradley and company as they were able to have their way in their first two matches of the season when it comes to offense. The lesson they should take from this is to play tit-for-tat by pressuring their opponents in their own half as well in order to force mistakes like they made.
Now, Toronto will look to bounce back from this dismal loss when they travel to Ohio to take on the Columbus Crew who are 1-0 on home soil. They just defeated the Seattle Sounders on the road to go 3-0 on the season thus far. Hosting Toronto will not be easy, but they certainly have the momentum going in.
In that match, Bradley will have to step up along with Alvaro Rey in the heart of the midfield to clean up and push into the final third as much as possible. In addition, if healthy, Jermain Defoe will have to score his fourth goal in as many games as he is still the only Toronto player to score for his club. He is the main target and will have to do more to help them against a tough Columbus team.
Real Salt Lake will finally get their MLS Cup final rematch at Sporting Kansas City next Saturday night in a battle for three points. Revenge will be on the players’ minds, but they know that they will have to play with composure in order to stop the 4-3-3 of the hosts who know exactly how to utilize every player in that formation.
