MLS Week 4 Review: 5 Storylines From the Weekend

MLS Week 4 in Review
Joe Camporeale - USA TODAY Sports

As Week 4 of MLS comes to a close, clubs are starting to face unfamiliar foes and matches become somewhat unpredictable. If there was a bracket setup for this week of MLS play, there would be a lot of mistakes on mine. The World Cup will cause a lot of holes in lineups when some of the league's prime players leave in June. A lot of clubs need to buckle down and make these first months count. Here are what I found important this week.

If there was an award in MLS for the most penalty kicks (PK), the Colorado Rapids would be a shoo-in. So far this season, the Rapids have been awarded five penalty kicks in the three games they have played. They were able to convert four of them, but still are in the bottom half of the Western Conference table.

Columbus Crew continued their best start in team history as they beat the Seattle Sounders this weekend. It was a spectacular match for the Crew because they were able to come from behind.

Chivas USA continues to surprise me. They may not be winning all their matches, but they are playing harder than ever. The New York Red Bulls were able to equalize the match before the last whistle blew, but it did not come easy. Chivas put up a fight, and they have has become the club whose matches you don't want to miss.

In 2013, former DC United and New York Red Bulls player Shawn Kukendall was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away two weeks ago on March 12, 2014. This weekend, clubs around the league wore black armbands in memoriam of Kukendall with "KukenStrong" written on them. One of my favorite parts of MLS is the community that comes from it.

The San Jose Earthquakes are known for their last-minute goals, and New England Revolution gave them a taste of their own medicine this weekend. Although the Revolution scored the first goal, the Earthquakes equalized soon after. In the 93rd minute, the Revolution were able to claim victory, and what a sweet victory it was.
