5 Things We Learned From PSG vs. Chelsea

Paris Saint Germain beat Chelsea 3-1 in the Champions League quarter-finals at Parc des Princes. The scoreline is not really a true reflection of the game as Chelsea kept PSG quiet for the majority of the match, although the quality of PSG and their players was there for all to see. At 2-1 it was looking like a relatively good result for Chelsea, but a 90th minute goal by Javier Pastore completely changed the complexion of the tie.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is usually the headline maker, especially in big games like this. This game was an unusually quiet one for the Swedish striker, though. There was no real threat on the Chelsea goal or any great impact on the game as a whole from Ibrahimovich, and to compound his day he was taken off injured after 69 minutes with a hamstring injury. He now also looks certain to miss the return leg at Stamford Bridge.

David Luiz played as a defensive midfielder alongside Ramires. Luiz is a strange player in that he is obviously extremely talented, but he looks like an accident waiting to happen at center-back and in midfield he just looks like a misfit most of the time. Today's game was filled with fouls and bad decisions from Luiz, who seems to have poor decision making and is a player you obviously cannot trust all of the time.

Edinson Cavani had a bad game. He was played out wide for the majority of it, until Ibrahimovic went off injured, and looked out of sorts throughout. His first touch was poor and he was, generally, very wasteful in possession. It's clearly not a position he is keen on, as he has stated recently, and his performance today showed exactly that. Although clearly a world class striker, he is wasted out on either wing.

PSG have shown everybody that money really can buy you genuine quality -- if you spend wisely. Ezequiel Lavezzi had a great game and scored a majestic first goal, Javier Pastore showed his quality from the bench with the third goal and Marco Verratti had a great game in midfield. Lucas Moura came off the bench to make an impact too and it just shows you, if you invest wisely, then real quality can be bought.

Chelsea didn't deserve to lose this game 3-1. Generally, they played quite well and contained PSG for the most part. They even looked threatening on the break with some of their attacking midfielders, but what they really lacked was a quality striker -- the game would have certainly been different if they had one. Andre Schurrle did his best in the position, but it's not natural to him. Chelsea must buy a top quality striker for next season.
