Predicting Germany's 23-Man Roster for the World Cup

The German National Team, or die Mannschaft, has more injury or form concerns than when I released my first prediction on their roster about a month ago. Luckily coach Joachim Loew has plenty of depth to keep his team as one of the favorites in the World Cup. The biggest injury concern may be Ilkay Gundogan whose injury may keep him out of the World Cup. This is how the roster is shaping up now, but check back in May for another look at Germany.

Only a major injury could keep Manuel Neuer from starting in goal. He showed why he is in the discussion for best goalie in the world during the first leg of Bayern Munich's Champions League match against Manchester United. He is even getting a little rest in the Bundesliga, which may be good for Germany.

Marcel Schmelzer should return from an injury in a couple weeks and a quick return to form should give him the starting job. The back line for Germany has a lot of moving parts. There are three good options at the position, but Schmelzer will have the edge when he returns.

CB - Benedikt Howedes

Benedikt Howedes is in the same boat as Schmelzer and will need to make his return soon. Having Howedes in the center back position gives Loew the most flexibility in his back line.

CB - Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels was part of a Borussia Dortmund defense that got ripped up by Real Madrid in the Champions League. He is a Manchester United transfer target but has looked a little sluggish. With Dortmund's almost guaranteed departure from the Champions League, Hummels will have more time to recover.

RB - Jerome Boateng

Jerome Boateng has a chance to move around the entire back line while in Brazil. Playing him on the wing with Howedes in the center gives a great deal of flexibility. The injuries could push Boateng back in the middle. Regardless the back line of Germany will be expected to win balls in the air.

DM - Philip Lahm

Philip Lahm wants to play in the midfield and will have a chance with the proposed back line. This has become his normal position for Bayern Munich, and there would be no reason to worry about him here while in Brazil. He has a better understanding of defensive positioning than most.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has found some goals lately, but he has also had a few cards issued. He will have to stay disciplined while in Brazil. Schweinsteiger and Lahm will play together in helping the defense with Lahm dropping back farther in many cases. The formation is setting up to be a 4-1-1-3-1.

Marco Reus has healed from his injury scare and will also be given more time to rest with Dortmund's impending exit from the Champions League. There are so many options on the wings for Loew, but Reus has the inside track as long as he stays healthy. Reus has scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga this year.

Mesut Ozil is another player dealing with an injury but proving his health gets him back in the lineup. He sent out a message saying he is getting back as soon as he can. Despite criticism of his play for Arsenal, he is still a major cog for the German team.

RW - Mario Goetze

Mario Goetze on the right side is something different. He may be a little out of place, but he needs to be on the field. He has been getting a little more rest lately with Bayern Munich having won the Bundesliga title. The wing players could be swapped out often during the World Cup, and the competition at these spots should be beneficial.

Mario Gomez has battled injury all year, but he should be back to full health at the beginning of May. He was once an outsider for the squad but now comes in as the best target player on the roster. The speed and crafty ability on the wings will call for a target in the middle, and Gomez is familiar with fulfilling this role.
