Atletico Madrid defeated Barcelona in front of their brilliant fans for the first time this season to advance to the semifinals of the Champions League. Without their top stars in Diego Costa and Arda Turan, they defied the odds to call themselves one of the best four sides among Europe's elite. Here are five reasons why they did it.

Atletico Madrid played defense like they never did before to make sure that the high-scoring Barcelona were unable to find the back of the net. The back line stood tall and strong and knew exactly how to position themselves against the front line of Barca including the middle three and the wing-backs when they joined in. Stopping a force like Barcelona is not easy, but this season, Atletico masterminded the task.

Not only did a midfielder, Koke, score the game-winner, the rest of the Atletico midfield were nothing short of sensational in the 4-4-2 setup. Raul Garcia, Gabi Torres and Tiago Mendes were all in the game both physically and mentally which is why Barcelona simply could not outplay them. They did record many more passes and possession, but Atleti's midfield unlocked them easily to try and strike on several counterattacks.

The fans did not stop singing since well before the opening whistle. In addition, their beautiful art and effort to support their team as a whole was nothing short of admirable. They truly were the 12th man today because they gave that extra energy and belief to the players who used it to their advantage.

2. Diego Simeone

This man is nothing short of a wonder as he has done many of those with the team at hand. In a league where Real Madrid and Barcelona are the best, he put Atletico Madrid right up there with them. It all started when Atletico won 2-1 over real Madrid in last season's Copa Del Rey Final. Now, he defeats Barca in the UCL. His dedication, love, discipline and respect for the game are all why they keep on winning.

This team has a unified belief that is truly hard to match by many. Barcelona at times tried to rely on individual talents of the midfield and strike line which is why it was quite easy for Atleti to read them as an entire team. Defending and attacking as a team is why they triumphed at the end of the 90 minutes and why they have not lost to Barcelona at all this season in four tries.
