In recent years, a match-up between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich has shaped up as one of the better rivalry matches in Europe. In a game that is known as the Klassiker there are many of “unpleasantries” exchanged and heated battles on the field. Unfortunately this year the Bundesliga title is already determined, and Bayern are 20 points ahead of Dortmund. There is a lack of significance, but hopefully the match will still create drama.
Both teams come off play in the Champions League. Bayern are through while Dortmund now gets to focus on securing a spot in next year’s competition. It is clear that Bayern’s focus is on winning this year’s Champions League, so they could sit some of their regulars after the midweek play. Dortmund are trying to hold down second place as they slowly get injured players back.
Relatively speaking, Bayern have slumped in their last two league matches while Dortmund has opened up a small three-point cushion over Schalke. The match-up may mean more for Dortmund, but the recent history should still make this a compelling match.
Mönchengladbach vs. Stuttgart
These two teams square off with different fates on the line. Stuttgart moved out of the relegation zone last weekend but now travel to fourth-place Gladbach. Stuttgart has only earned 11 points in 14 road games while Gladbach has the second-best home record in the league this season. Stuttgart score in about 86 percent of their away games but also concede at a more frequent rate. Expect goals with these two teams averaging over two goals per match when they face off.
Wolfsburg vs. Nürnberg
Wolfsburg is chasing Gladbach as they hold onto the last Europa League spot by three points. They are also only one point out of fourth place while Nürnberg were dropped into the relegation zone last week. With one of the worst goal differentials in the Bundesliga, Nürnberg will also be on the losing end of tiebreakers and must find a way to earn points.
Nürnberg has managed only six points in their last eight games. However, the last two meetings between these teams have ended in a draw.
The last couple weeks in the Bundesliga have proved that form is fallacy. The results have not been what one may think on paper. Regardless here are the predictions for this weekend’s matches.
Schalke 1 - Eintracht Frankfurt 0
Hannover 1 - Hamburg 1
Eintracht Braunschweig 2 - Freiburg 1
Mönchengladbach 3 – Stuttgart 1
Mainz 2 - Werder Bremen 2
Wolfsburg 2 - Nürnberg 0
Bayern Munich 2 – Dortmund 2
Leverkusen 2 - Hertha Berlin 1
Hoffenheim 1 - Augsburg 1
