Manchester United have been in need of reinforcements at central midfield for many, many years now, and with talk of a huge spending spree this summer, now could be the time the position is finally addressed. Marounne Fellaini hasn't quite settled at United yet and Michael Carrick hasn't had his best season either. The question should not be whether United will sign a midfielder this summer but just which midfielder it will be.

Cheick Tiote of Newcastle United is a player whp has been linked with all the top clubs in England over the past few years. The reason most teams decide against a move for Tiote is because of his disciplinary record. He acquires far too many cards from referees and other teams have to question whether they can really rely on him. He is certainly the type of player United need, though, and he could be a cheaper option for David Moyes.

Maxime Gonalons has been gaining more and more acclaim recently. He has been linked with both Manchester United and Arsenal, and a move to the Premier League looks as though it could be ahead in the Frenchman's future. Gonalons is a defensive midfielder who protects the back-four well and gives the midfield a defensive structure, in addition to being tidy on the ball. United could pursue Gonalons, and if they do, he would fit very well indeed.

Alex Song is well known to fans of the Premier League after he came to everybody's attention at Arsenal a few years ago. After a couple of years struggling to get near the Barcelona team, Song could move back to the Premier League this summer. He would be a good fit for United, but Barcelona's recent transfer ban may mean he ends up having to stay in Spain for the time being.

Fernando has been a target for United's rivals Manchester City recently, and both Manchester clubs could pursue the player in the summer. As a defensive midfielder who excels at retrieving the ball for his team through tough tackling or reading the game well and intercepting, Fernando is exactly the type of player United need. A move this summer looks increasingly likely, whether he goes to United or not.

Ander Herrera notoriously almost joined Manchester United from Athletic Bilbao on the final day of last summer's transfer window. Whether it was actually a botched deal by United or they simply decided against the idea of spending £31m on an unproven talent is unknown. A return for the Spaniard in the summer has been speculated on, and considering how clearly fond of the player United are, it's a move that could finally happen.

5. Marek Hamsik

Rumors suggest that Marek Hamsik hasn't been too enamored with life under Rafael Benitez at Napoli this season. That isn't exactly surprising when you look at Hamsik and the way he has played this year. Reports suggest he could move this summer, and United are a team that have been strongly linked. You have to question whether Hamsik is the type of player United need, though; United really require a more defensively minded player than Hamsik is.

William Carvalho has come from nowhere this season to the forefront of a lot of clubs' shopping lists. A big, physical defensive midfielder who is progressing year-on-year, he is exactly what United need in midfield. Providing the physicality and the defensive stability they sorely lack at the moment and still being young with room for growth, he would be a fantastic addition and one United are clearly very interested in obtaining.

Reports suggest that United made a bid for Sami Khedira last summer only to have the bid rejected by Real Madrid. Khedira has been out injured for the majority of this season and is also a doubt for the World Cup in Brazil. Khedira would be a great fit in the United midfield and would be among the better options for United to pursue if they go back for him again.

2. Ilkay Gundogan

This time last year, Ilkay Gundogan was one of the hottest midfield properties around. One injury hit year later and the rush for his signature is that little bit calmer. Gundogan only has 12 months remaining on his Borussia Dortmund contract and could be available for a cut-price fee this summer. It could be a gamble, considering the persistent back injury the German has, but it could well be a gamble United will take on such a fantastic player.

Toni Kroos is turning into the biggest transfer saga of this season. With Bayern Munich unwilling to pay the German what he believes he is worth in his new contract so far, speculation has turned to potential suitors for the midfielder. He isn't exactly what United need, but he is a fantastic player and one which would no doubt help the United rebuild. Whether Kroos will actually leave Bayern is still doubtful at this point, though.
