MLS Week 6 Highlights

It was a busy weekend in MLS play. Some clubs are starting to lose their footing as others are stepping up. The best players are beginning to stand out as their names repeatedly make headlines or are nominated for goals of the week. MLS is getting more exciting every week, and it is still a long time before playoffs. These are the 5 things that stood out to me this week.

Kevin Alston and Jerry Bengtson were the goal scorers of the match for New England Revolution. Alston scored his debut MLS goal, and it was the match-winner. Revolution were offense heavy during the match and ready to attack, but it was Alston who played hard in defense. Alston was without a doubt the MVP of the match.

The Colorado Rapids won the second match in row after defeating Toronto FC 1-0. It was a sloppy match for Toronto who could not keep up without stars Michael Bradley and Jermain Defoe, who were both out on injury. This begs the question of whether Toronto FC is a new club or just a club carried by its two stars. I think it's too early to say.

There's bad news for Chivas USA, whose match against Portland Timbers ended in a draw. A good fight was put up by both sides, but unluckily for Chivas Thomas McNamara went out in the 68th minute. It appears to be a knee injury, which "looks pretty bad" according to head coach Wilmer Cabrera. This will be a tough blow for the club, who have really benefited from McNamara so far this season.

LA Galaxy offered another amazing goal this week as Robbie Keane's strike against the Vancouver Whitecaps was nominated for Goal of the Week. Keane has received much praise for his powerful strike, but he's given a lot of credit to midfielder Stefan Ishizaki. Ishizaki is really beginning to impress for Galaxy, and I definitely see him becoming a regular in the lineup.

The most important news of the week is not yet official. MLS announced that Arthur Blank, the owner of the Atlanta Falcons, is set to have a huge announcement on Wednesday, Apr. 12. He will announce that Atlanta will be given an MLS expansion club. This is always very exciting news to MLS fans everywhere.
