Expectations in the World Cup are always high for Argentina. The fifth-place finish at the 2010 World Cup was a bit of a letdown for fans. This year Argentina has a chance to claim the World Cup title for the first time since 1986. To lose in the final, they will have to get there first. There should be no problem getting out of the group as Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina fight for second place. This would set up a favorable match-up in the quarterfinals. If Argentina lives up to their billing, the semifinals should be their first real challenge.

This team should have no problem scoring. Every time they get the ball in the attacking third there is promise. The match against Iran in the group stage could be one of the biggest blowouts of the World Cup. Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain have had the scoring touch lately.

Then there is Messi. It seems that he is finally being played as a central attacker for his country which is where he produces for Barcelona. This should help bring his goal scoring average up and create a dynamic grouping of forwards that will be tough for any defense.

When all of your horses are in the attack the team can be susceptible to counter attacks. Right now the fullback positions are still in question and the top goalie, Sergio Romero, is not getting minutes with his club team. There will be plenty of pressure on the defensive midfielders and the back line to win the ball back, but as the competition level rises, so will the difficulty in retaining possession.

With the expectations placed on Argentina, the level of energy exerted to get to the final may just exhaust the tank. They will be on the same continent, but it is highly likely that they will face host Brazil in the final. That is a highly emotional situation. Even if it is Germany, their midfield may truly exploit any growing defensive issues.
