Top 5 Candidates for 2014 MLS MVP

Week 6 MLS MVP
Robert Stanton - USA TODAY Sports

As the 2014 MLS season continues, there are a lot more goals being scored. I don't think goalkeepers are getting tired, but it's clubs' offenses that are getting better in their forms. This is why forwards from all around are starting to shine in the league. Last year's MLS MVP was Chicago Fire's forward Mike Magee, and it was with good reason. Here are my top 5 picks for MLS MVP so far this season.

5. Quincy Amarikwa

Although former MLS MVP Mike Magee hasn't quite made my list yet, his Chicago Fire teammate Quincy Amarikwa is starting to turn heads. Amarikwa has started in five of Chicago's matches this season and has scored three goals for his club. He made headlines over the weekend after making the equalizing goal against Montreal Impact. Keep an eye on this rising star.

4. Chris Wondolowski

It is of no surprise that Chris Wondolowski is on my list. He continues to excel in the game and helped the San Jose Earthquakes with an equalizing goal. Wondolowski oozes quality on the pitch, and luckily he's been called up to the U.S. National Team. He may be absent from MLS for a chunk of the season while playing in Brazil, but I think he still has what it takes to be MLS MVP.

3. Robbie Keane

Robbie Keane hadn't been given a chance to show off his skill set with the awkward scheduling Los Angeles Galaxy had at the beginning of the season, but now that the club is into the full swing of things, he's really taken off. He's made three goals in four matches and does so much more on the pitch. He does not take his captaincy for granted and is an ideal player.

2. Erick Torres

21-year-old Erick Torres continues to impress on the pitch. He is one of a handful of players helping carry Chivas USA out of its usual last place. He's ranked second for most goals in the whole league with a total of five in six matches. He is the kind of forward Chivas needed and doesn't seem to be intimidated by the older veteran MLS players. If he keeps it up, I can definitely see him as an MVP finalist this season.

1. Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey has won MLS Player of the Week for the second time in a row and for good reason. Dempsey is a beast on the pitch. He scored two goals for the Seattle Sounders in this week's match, one of which was the winning goal. He leads the league in goals scored with six in four matches. He is the player opposing defenses needs to watch out for the most. I have no doubt he'll continue to dominate and become an MLS MVP finalist.
