Los Angeles Galaxy will face familiar opponents Vancouver Whitecaps this weekend. If you think you’re experiencing déjà vu, you’re not; this is the second match in a back-to-back series for Galaxy and Whitecaps. Although last week they faced each other in Carson, Ca. at The StubHub Center, now they will play in BC Place in Vancouver, Canada. So, with the Whitecaps now having the “home field advantage” of their fans, will they be able to take down Galaxy? I sure hope not.
Last week the Galaxy defeated the Whitecaps 1-0. I thought it was a rather close match, but Galaxy players really stepped up. Jaime Penedo was welcomed back into the lineup and did an incredible job. The Galaxy back-line was somewhat flawed as Galaxy’s defense is dealing with injuries, but Penedo was able to keep the Whitecaps from hitting the net.
Stefan Ishizaki is really starting to shine in the club, and his great connection to Robbie Keane led to the goal of the match. I expect Ishizaki to continue doing well for the Galaxy; he is slowly becoming an essential part of the Galaxy lineup. Either with assists or scoring goals himself, Ishizaki is helping Galaxy regain its rightful place up top. Galaxy is not devoid of a good offense, and it needs to put its best players forward to win the match.
The Whitecaps are currently one spot above Galaxy in MLS standings, but this will change if Galaxy beats the Whitecaps — which I think is necessary. The Galaxy barely earned its first win of the season last week against the Whitecaps, and it needs to continue to show the league it has what it takes to return to the playoffs. These next matches are crucial if it wants to continue rising to the top of the Western Conference standings.
