Serie A: Roma Shows Class Against AC Milan
Club AS Roma defeated AC Milan by a score of 2-0 thanks to goals courtesy of Miralem Pjanic and Gervinho in a game where they were able to play exactly how they desired — passing the ball freely and beating defenders without breaking a real sweat. The difference could have been even greater as the visitors seemed as if they did not even care.
Passing the ball, running and using the wingbacks to push up the field to join the attack worked wonders as both Dodo (left-back) and Maicon (right-back) consistently joined their teammates in midfield up to the final third as they were able to do so freely. They did not feel any pressure whatsoever and this even made their defensive duties much easier to accomplish.
Clarence Seedorf is having trouble leading his club against the bigger clubs in the Serie A. He just hung up his laces, then immediately stood on the sidelines, agreeing to coach one of the best clubs in the history of soccer without any experience whatsoever at this level. The players do respect him, but he does not have the utmost respect as he used to play with some of these guys in recent years. Regardless, he needs to find a way to convince his guys to play an attacking style of soccer without sitting back too much when they are afraid of the home teams they visit.
Milan can rely on Riccardo Montolivo to orchestrate the midfield if they can protect him, get him involved more and trust in his abilities to lead this team against all. He is their captain, but with all of the egos and players trying to prove themselves, they do not use him as much as they should.
As for Roma, second place is all but a guarantee with the remaining matches. They will host Juventus in two weeks time in a match that they should win, but cutting down their lead to eight points will be insufficient to lift their first league title in years. However, they will be guaranteeing a Champions League group spot for next season.
