2014 World Cup: 5 Best Goalkeepers

I'm a supporter of the saying "the best offense is a good defense." If a team's back line does its job, then the goalkeeper shouldn't have to work too hard. Unfortunately, no one is perfect, but a good goalkeeper is there to try and fix the mistakes of his teammates. Here are the top five goalkeepers who often save their teams and clubs from worse fates.

During the 2010 World Cup, the England goalkeeper had quite the blunder. I don't think this will be an issue for Joe Hart. He plays for one of the best clubs in the EPL, and he gets plenty of practice playing against international stars. So, strikers will have to work a little harder to sneak a ball around him.

This will be Tim Howard's last World Cup, and hopefully the U.S. National Team can help him end on a high note. He may be a little old for a footballer, but it does not show in the way he plays. He makes some incredible saves for his nation, and he has plenty of experience, which he'll need to help USMNT get out of group stage.

3. Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois is slowly becoming one of the best goalkeepers. He's played for some of the best clubs in Europe, and now he will face off against some of the best international players. Courtois has nothing to be afraid of; he is constantly guarding the goal against the likes of Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi. He'll help Belgium more than you think a goalkeeper can.

2. Gianluigi Buffon

Gianluigi Buffon is definitely a living legend. Italy has a lot to be thankful for in a goalkeeper, and Juventus gives him plenty of training and experience. He's guarded the net against some of the best strikers in his time and has won many titles with both club and country. Being older does not make him any slower on his feet; he will definitely put his best foot forward this summer.

Iker Casillas is no stranger to winning titles, be it with Real Madrid or Spain's National Team. He is the most capped player for Spain, and all that experience only gives him more of an edge over opponents. I truly think he's currently the best goalkeeper in the world, and strikers of all skill levels will need to work hard to get one past him.
