After 9 weeks of play, which players continue to stay on top? Sometimes the best clubs carry the best players, but sometimes a player in a lesser club still manages in stand out. One of the great things about the MLS is that it is rare for one player to carry a club. This makes deciding on MVP candidates a littler harder, but that's why it's fun. Here are my top 5 for this week.

5. Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry Week 9 MLS MVP

Thierry Henry has been a little too quiet for me this season, but I think he's starting to remind New York Red Bull critiques who he is. He made an incredible assist for the match-winning goal last week, which is a great example of why he is MVP material.

4. Brad Davis

4. Brad Davis

Brad Davis Week 9 MLS MVP

It's hard to call Brad Davis an MVP candidate when Houston Dynamo is coming off a seven-match streak of no wins, but Davis' talents are part of the reason Houston is still second in the eastern conference. He was a true leader on the pitch during its most recent match, and he was the one to score the equalizer which set the stage for its win.

3. Obafemi Martins

3. Obafemi Martins

Obafemi Martins Week 9 MLS MVP

Obafemi Martins lead the league and assists and he's part of the Seattle Sounders duo that makes the club so scary to take on. He's truly helping take the club to another level and his value to the club is really quite priceless. If he keeps this up, not only will the Sounders continue to be the toughest club in the league, but he will definitely become and MVP finalist.

2. Clint Dempsey

Can the Seattle Sounders be stopped? Not if Clint Dempsey can help it. He proves his worth as a DP week after week for the Sounders, and the club and fans are forever grateful. His partnership with Obafemi Martins is downright scary, and he is definitely MLS MVP material.

1. Joao Plata

Joao Plata Week 9 MLS MVP

Joao Plata was one of the best players during the first weeks of the season, and after spending some time out for injury, he is back at it again. He lead Real Salt Lake to its comeback against Chicago Fire, which earned him the title of MLS Player of the Week.
