Striker Jozy Altidore has seen action across Europe after originally coming up with the New York Red Bulls and is currently playing for Sunderland of the Premier League. The goal was a game winner for the New York Red Bulls in the 83rd minute to beat the Columbus Crew 1-0 from 28 yards out. Altidore followed that performance up with two more goals in his next six appearances.

With the only goal for the New York Red Bulls in a semifinal match with D.C. United, Altidore became the youngest player to score in the MLS Playoffs at 16 years, 337 days old. He broke the previous record set by DaMarcus Beasley by nearly three years.

Villarreal of La Liga made an agreement with MLS and the New York Red Bulls to sign Altidore for a fee of roughly ten million dollars on June 4, 2008. This is the largest fee ever paid for any MLS player and surpassed the four million dollar fee paid by Fulham for Clint Dempsey.
