Clubs Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund played a truly entertaining match in the DFB Pokal final. The former took it 2-0 after Extra Time thanks to Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller each finding the net. However, the scoreline did not justify the performance of the losing squad in the least.
In the second half of regulation, Mats Hummels headed home what was supposed to be the opener, but the ball was cleared away by defender Dante. The ball had clearly crossed the line as was shown by instant replay, but the lack of goal-line technology ended up hurting the yellow and black side.
Regardless, what is done is done and we have witnessed Bayern Munich win two more trophies. In the German Super cup, these two sides will face off again as Dortmund was a finalist in both the Bundesliga race and, of course, in today’s DFB Pokal cup final. These two sides’ rivalry has grown more and more intense with each passing season, and now that Robert Lewandowski will be joining them in the summer, the strength of the Bavarian side may simply be too much to bare.
Coach Pep Guardiola faced a huge amount of criticism in the semifinal loss against Real Madrid in the Champions League, but with the league title and cup now in his cabinet, his job should be safe for the time being. One thing he should consider is to forget just a bit of the possession factor as teams can learn how to rip them on the counter, much like Real Madrid did. Once his team learns how to possess the ball for the right amount of time then hit one on frame, they will be even better … Just like they were under Jupp Heynckes a year ago.
