Champions League: Real Madrid Overcome Atletico Madrid
Real Madrid just won their 10th Champions League title against Atletico Madrid in the first ever final to be played by teams from the same city. This was truly one of the games that will always be remembered.
The entire team played very well, but Luka Modric, Angel di Maria, Marcelo, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos all put their hearts and souls into this game to make sure their team ended up victorious. Modric dictated the center of the park, di Maria terrorized defenders while assisting Bale’s winner with Marcelo and Ronaldo both scoring late on to finalize the scoreline of 4-1.
Atletico Madrid were winning this match 1-0 but five minutes of added time truly ruined their chances when Ramos cancelled out the error of Iker Casillas early on in the game when he headed home the game-saving corner. Afterwards, Casillas hugged and kissed Ramos — something that can be seen or noted as one captain saving the other, and perhaps passing down the armband to the new leader of this club.
The losing side were led by coach Diego Simeone whose club’s only goal was scored by defender Diego Godin, who was busy all game long with Miranda as they had to clear the danger several times. He and all of his teammates played a great game, but they were undone by fatigue and a lengthier game than was originally expected.
Even with the loss, Simeone should be highly considered and regarded as the coach of the year as he has a squad that had nowhere near the same budget as their rivals, Real. They won the La Liga last week when they tied 1-1 at Barcelona which is something that was not expected at the beginning of the season. This was their first UCL loss all season long. Now, they will have to worry about losing some of their best players.
The game’s final result was justified as the winner dominated most of the match when it comes to possession and the creation of chances. They showed a bit more passion, energy and willingness to win which is why they have won number 10 today.
With Real Madrid winning, they now make themselves known as the best club in Europe once again. Now, they can look forward to the new season months away, but before that, most of their players will take part in the 2014 World Cup which commences on June 12.
