At home, Argentina defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-0, but their performance was nowhere near glossy, as they seemed to not take it too seriously. Their defense was OK; their midfield was strong. But their front three relied too much on others to make things happen.
Leo Messi is clearly considered his country’s best asset, and this can be an issue in the World Cup. A lot of the Trinidad players tried to double- or even triple-team him at times in order to disallow his ability to create magic. This freed up his other teammates, but they were unable to do much on the goal-front besides passing the ball and botching shots.
Rodrigo Palacio is the only striker who scored as Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodriguez scored the latter of the goals. Angel di Maria and Messi kept trying to help others score instead of ripping enough times on frame themselves. This was simply a warm-up friendly, but a team with this talent and caliber is supposed to thrive against much lower opposition.
Trinidad themselves played calmly throughout the match as they were able to possess the ball up and down the field and gave the home side a run for their money. They were unable to score or really pose an offensive threat, but they held their own regardless of the 3-0 scoreline.
Messi, di Maria, Palacio, Mascherano and Sergio Aguero are going to be their most important pieces in Brazil. With their experience and leadership, they will make good things happen for a nation that is in dire need of another World Cup trophy.
