Arsene Wenger has acknowledged the exact needs of his team. He wants a striker, a winger, a defensive midfielder and a goalie. None of those are shocking, as each area could use some much needed depth.
But in the case of strikers, Olivier Giroud cannot play every game himself. In the case of wingers, injury are a constant concern. Defensive midfielders are almost nonexistent on Arsenal. At goalie, one keeper can play just about every game. Obviously one is needed in reserve, but it’s not like you’d need a world-class talent to ride the bench.
Well, it’s world-class talents that are being linked to Arsenal. Both Pepe Reina and Iker Casillas, who start for their national teams, are linked to the team. So is Victor Valdes, another world-class goalie.
Supposedly, the purpose of grabbing a goalie like that is to challenge Wojciech Szczesny for his No. 1 jersey. Competition is definitely a good way to get the best out of a player, but at the same time, it could be seen as a lack of faith in the Polish international, who has been nothing if not solid for Arsenal.
Not only that, but why spend all the money required to wrangle in a world-class goalie when you’ve already got one? That money could be used elsewhere on much bigger needs than a backup goalie.
Rumors mean nothing, but the fact that Wenger is even inquiring after these talents is eye-opening.
