It was a heart-stopping match for the USMNT, but they managed to escape away with a daring victory. While the victory is worth noting, their performance left many wondering how they plan on facing the even tougher competition in the group. Here are the individual American player ratings for their win against Ghana.

Tim Howard was by far the best American player today. If it weren't for him, the U.S. would be sitting in third place with zero points. He managed to make a number of great saves and was constantly shouting out orders to his defenders to try and reorganize the American backline. He had no fault in Ghana's goal. 7.5 out of 10 for Howard.

The only knock on Fabian Johnson is his lazy coverage on Ghana's goal. Outside of that, he was one of the best defenders for the American side. Ghana hardly ever attacked on their left side, opting to attack the extremely weak Demarcus Beasley. Johnson even managed to make a couple of offensive runs that helped the Americans hold on to the lead at the end. 6.5 out of 10 for Johnson.

Geoff Cameron was the player forced to suffer with the threat that Asamoah Gyan posed. Cameron was never able to contain him and lost to him on a number of occasions. Even then, Cameron managed to get in a couple of key tackles and headers to help the U.S. miraculously pull of the win. 5 out of 10 for Cameron.

CB - Matt Besler

Matt Besler continued the USA's unfortunate injury-filled night. He had to come out at halftime because of an injury he received at the end of the half. Before that, he was the heart of the American defense. Despite Ghana attacking mostly on the right, he covered most of Beasley's mistakes very well. He was well-positioned and timed his tackles perfectly. 7.5 out of 10 for Besler.

LB - Demarcus Beasley

Demarcus Beasley was the worst player in the field. It was perhaps the worst performance of the World Cup so far. Beasley was being abused on the left flank, never being able to control whoever decided to attack him. He also never managed to communicate his runs, as every time he decided to go up, he would leave a giant hole that Ghana would take advantage of. Klinsmann will have to seriously consider benching him after this. 2 out of 10.

CDM - Kyle Beckerman

Kyle Beckerman tried his best, but his efforts couldn't contain the overwhelming attacks from Ghana. He was often left alone due to Jermaine Jones always being out of position and Michael Bradley's poor defending. He managed to gain possession a couple of times, but it was a poor showing overall. 5 out of 10 for Beckerman.

RM - Alejandro Bedoya

Alejandro Bedoya, much like the rest of the American midfield, was simply run over for the entire game. He sacrificed his offensive capabilities to help out on the defensive end, but the effort is all that can be rescued from his performance. The crosses he put in were never accurate, and his coverages were lazy. 5 out of 10 for Bedoya.

LM - Jermaine Jones

The first half that Jermaine Jones played was extremely unorganized. He was running around the entire field that left the USA's left wing completely vulnerable. Coach Klinsmann must have spoken to him during the half, as his second half was much more organized. His tenacity on defense and tireless efforts are appreciated, but he provided little offense. 5.5 out of 10 for Jones.

Much was expected out of Michael Bradley, but his performance was extremely disappointing. He's known for his accurate passes and excellent technique, but it seemed that all of his passes went straight to the opposition. His defensive work alongside Beckerman was also subpar, never managing to bother the opposing Ghana midfielders. 5 out 10 for Bradley

ST - Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey went into the record books. He scored the fifth fastest goal in World Cup history and did it with an amazing goal. He let the U.S. breathe a huge sigh of relief with that goal and tried his best to create for others as the game continued, though his interventions were too inconsistent. 7 out of 10 for Dempsey.

ST - Jozy Altidore

An injury caused Jozy Altidore to be subbed out 20 minutes into the game, so he won't receive a grade. Before the unfortunate injury, he was holding up balls well and quickly playing off teammates like a good target man. His injury might be a big problem for the USMNT in the future.

Aron Johannsson was left to fend off the defenders by himself as the rest of the team stayed back. The duty that would have been left to Jozy Altidore simply couldn't be done by Johannsson. He suffered by himself and never bothered the goalkeeper. 4 out of 10 for Johannsson.

Make no doubt about it; today's game will be one to remember for the young 21-year-old. He's no doubt the American hero after scoring in the last minutes and securing the American win. His defense was erratic at times, but that can be forgiven for his fantastic goal. 7 out of 10 for Brooks.

Graham Zusi came in for the extremely tired Alejandro Bedoya, and he gave the U.S. some fresh legs in order to hold on to the lead. At the end of the game, he was asking for the ball so he could hold on to it for the American victory. 6 out of 10 for Zusi.

Bradley was absolutely atrocious. inaccurate and over shot passes all game and flat footed on several attacks near goal. there was one corner kick the came merely feet away from him and he made no attempt to even take a stab at it.

    • Cafone

      I concur.

5 out of 10 is far too generous.

      • Alec Graham

I feel the same way. He gave up the ball too much, had no offensive contributions, nor any defensive ones either. 2.5 out of 10.
