Italy's performance against Costa Rica adds to the list of surprising games at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. They were completely outperformed by Costa Rica, who pressed the Italians all game long and took advantage of their chances. Find out how each Italian performed, or rather underperformed, against Costa Rica.

It was an unfortunate night for Gianluigi Buffon, who played well but could do nothing to avoid the Italian defeat. Whenever Costa Rica shot at him, he resolved the situation with his usual class. Bryan Ruiz's goal was impossible to stop. 7 out of 10 for Buffon.

Ignazio Abate was perhaps Italy's worst defender on the day, as he was never able to stop Cristian Bolaños on his side, and he was helpless against Junior Diaz's strong offensive runs. The lone Costa Rican goal came from Abate's side after some lazy coverage on his part. 3 out of 10 for Abate.

Not much is to be said of Andrea Barzagli's performance. Costa Rica never bothered him too much, especially in the second half. He controlled Campbell well, and he handled the substitutes just as well. Bolaños did give him some problems though. 6 out of 10 for Barzagli.

World Cup games are usually defined by subtle mistakes. Today, Chiellini's mistake of leaving Bryan Ruiz alone on the game-winning header defined the game. Besides the obvious mental lapse, he had a near perfect game, as he was impenetrable as the game went on. 6 out of 10 for Chiellini.

Matteo Darmian was one of the few Italian players proving a clear option on offense (even though he's a defender). Every time he ran forward to attack, he broke down the Costa Rican defensive scheme. Even then, he didn't do it enough and was often stationed on the left waiting for a simple pass. 5 out of 10 for Matteo Darmian.

CM - Daniele de Rossi

It was a game to forget for Daniele de Rossi, who didn't provide his usual defensive tenacity and never managed to become the spark plug that the Italian offense needed. He never managed to control Bryan Ruiz, and he gave away a number of key passes. 4 out of 10 for de Rossi.

CM - Thiago Motta

He completed his role in the midfield relatively well. He was able to intercept a number of passes, and whenever he got the ball he immediately passed it to Pirlo or de Rossi. That said, he was a reason for Italy's stagnant first-half offense. He was subbed during halftime in order to give Italy more offensive firepower. 5 out of 10 for Motta.

Antonio Candreva didn't cause as much damage as he had in the game against England. His crosses were poor, he had trouble getting past Junior Diaz and he wasn't very active off the ball either. He was rightly taken out in the early moments of the second half. 4 out of 10 for Candreva.

LM - Claudio Marchisio

Much more is to be expected from Claudio Marchisio's games. Much like the rest of the Italian midfield, he was slow, stagnant and lacked creativity. He was called on to be one of Italy's creators, and he never once produced a solid offensive option. 4 out of 10 for Marchisio.

As expected, he was Italy's best midfielder throughout the game. Their best chances came from his long passes, and he always tried to create something from out of nothing. That said, he was also becoming sloppy at the end of the game and lost a number of easy passes. 6.5 out of 10 for Pirlo.

ST - Mario Balotelli

It was a poor display from Mario Balotelli against Costa Rica. He could never get past his defenders, and in the two times that he managed to get past them, he couldn't keep his composure and panicked with the finish. Italy depends on Balotelli to finish every chance he gets, but he couldn't deliver against Keylor Navas. 3 out of 10 for Balotelli.

Antonio Cassano was called to try and create more chances for Balotelli, but he could never figure out the Costa Rican defense. He started out well, with swift turns and good dribbles, but he slowly began to be drowned out by the defense. 5 out of 10 for Cassano.

Sub - Lorenzo Insigne

Of all the substitutions made during the World Cup so far, Lorenzo Insigne was the worst one. He had trouble controlling the ball, he never made a good pass, he couldn't get past the defense and when he did, he was always offside. He only made Italy worse. 2 out of 10 for Insigne.

Alessio Cerci was the last player to go out on the pitch, but he could never get past the extremely organized Costa Rican defense. Deployed on the right, he tried cutting in a number of times for a shot but was always stopped cold. 4 out of 10 for Cerci.
