Costa Rica‘s heroic goalkeeper Keylor Navas has joined Real Madrid from fellow La Liga side Levante. With Diego Lopez on his way out, Navas is expected to either start or back up Iker Casillas. Based on both of the keepers’ performances from the World Cup, the newcomer is expected to get the nod.
Navas saved his side a countless number of times during the World Cup’s group stage as the Central American nation managed to win a group that consisted of England, Uruguay and Italy. In the Round of 16, he made the game-winning save during the penalty kick shootout against Greece before shutting down the Netherlands in 120 minutes of quarterfinal play. His ability to read an opponent, position himself smartly in between the posts and to dive until he gets a hand on the ball all make him the impressive talent he is. At 27, starting for Real Madrid over the embarrassing Iker Casillas is a no-brainer.
Casillas allowed five goals against the Netherlands and two against Chile with most of the blame being placed on him. His mind was not on the game as he kept finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. At 33, his starting days for both club and country may well be over.
The Costa Rican comes over to the nation’s capital with La Liga experience already under his belt with Levante since 2012. He was decent throughout his time at the club, but he is expected to be even better for the reigning title holders of the Champions League. He played against some of the very best nations in the world without batting an eyelash. He showed us all that he is fearless and leaves it all on the field for the team that he represents. Navas is going to succeed for Real Madrid; you can bet on it.
