Manager Arsene Wenger has made it clear that Arsenal is only as strong as their goalkeeper, and according to the Arsenal roster, Wojciech Szczesny is the only goalkeeper at the club. However, despite many believing Szczesny is a world-class goalkeeper and provides strength and stability in net, Wenger is not convinced. Wenger will look to add another goalkeeper to strengthen the unit.
Rumor has it that Wenger is looking to sign Colombia and Nice goalkeeper David Ospina to either back up or even start ahead of Szczesny. Arsenal last season had a knack for giving up goals late in the game which might have cost Arsenal the title; Wenger, in result, began signing defensive players such as Mathieu Debuchy and is currently looking to secure Javi Manquillo from Atletico Madrid.
For Wenger, it is a matter of bolstering the defense and goalkeeping positions to allow the offense to possess and give Arsenal the lead. Good defense leading to great offense is apparently the mantra of Wenger at the moment as he continues to comb the transfer market for top-name defensive players who give Arsenal a chance to win the English Premier League.
Wenger will have to be patient at the moment and wait on certain players such as Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira because Real Madrid is not exactly ready to give up the German midfielder. The Khedira transfer is eerily similar to that of Mesut Ozil last season. Ozil was available late in the transfer window and Wenger was able to pick him up then.
Wenger will look to improve the team and give Arsenal the best chance at a championship and bolstering the defense will help, but I don’t believe Szczesny is the problem. The problem was the defense which led to goals being scored on Szczesny. Once the defense is primed and ready to go, Szczesny will play at the highest level possible.
