It is Germany’s World Cup trophy and they can do whatever they want with it. Apparently, that includes breaking it.
Do not worry Germany fans because the trophy itself is still intact. It was just a small piece that was chipped off. The other good news is that German soccer federation president Wolfgang Niersbach has already found an expert to fix the trophy. The bad news is no one knows how it broke, or at least, no one is talking about it.
“At one point, a small piece of our World Cup trophy was chipped off,” Niersbach said, according to ESPN. “But do not worry! We have specialists on the case who can fix it. We have investigated persistently who it was that damaged the trophy, but the investigation was concluded without a result.”
Germany won its fourth World Cup title by making it out of the dreaded “Group of Death” that consisted of the United States, Portugal and Ghana. An impressive win over Portugal, a tie against Ghana and a 1-0 win over the United States is what allowed Germany to advance out of the group. Difficult matches against Algeria and France did not slow Germany down as they began to look like a team of destiny.
Then came one of the most impressive beat downs in World Cup history. Germany’s 7-1 win against Brazil in the semifinals was astonishing. The unselfish style of play led to five goals scored in the first half, the most ever by a single team in the history of the World Cup. It also showed that Germany could not be stopped.
Germany won the World Cup by defeating Argentina in extra time.
