With the attacking outlay that Chelsea already have, Jose Mourinho decided to bring legendary striker Didier Drogba back to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have already spent a great amount of money on the transfers of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, yet they still felt that it was necessary to bring back the talented striker. Under the leadership of Mourinho, Drogba led Chelsea to a Premier League title and was also one of the most feared strikers in the league.
While many would think that the purchase of Costa would have been enough firepower to sustain them through the season, it is clearly evident that Mourinho thought otherwise. It may seem that Mourinho does not trust Fernando Torres to do the job and has completely lost faith in him. After the loss of Frank Lampard to New York City FC, Mourniho is clearly going after experience. Bringing back Drogba to the team is a way not only to ensure that he has a top class striker but also someone with a wealth of experience after playing at the top level for so many years.
Chelsea will be very serious about taking the title from Manchester City after having come so close last season. Manchester United cannot be discounted after such an impressive showing in their preseason. The return of Drogba signals an end to the career of Torres in my estimation. The former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid striker has never seemed comfortable.
Even while Chelsea can be considered to be one of the best teams in the league with talent such as Eden Hazard and Oscar, the return of the Ivorian striker could be one of the best decisions that Mourinho will make all season. It will give Chelsea that spark in the battle for the Premier League trophy.
