It was announced today that Evetron FC have completed the club record £28m signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea. This is a huge deal for Everton. Not only does the amount of money signal intent, but it also makes their current squad ready to do battle for a Champions League spot.
Some may argue that this signing doesn’t make too much of a difference. After all Lukaku was on loan at Everton all last season, and they didn’t make top four then. However, I see it differently. First off, Lukaku is one year older and one year better. Not only does he have a first full Premier League season under his belt, but he also starred for Belgium during the World Cup in Brazil. This makes him and Everton’s squad even better this year.
On top of this, Everton have not sold any of their best players for the first time in a long time. For example, last year they sold Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United, and the year before it was Jack Rodwell to Manchester City. However, this year they have sold no one. Everton have also managed to get last year’s loan players Gareth Barry and now Lukaku on full transfers, and the Toffees have also signed Muhamed Besic for £4m, making this the best side Everton have had for years.
In this offseason, Everton have also managed to get their brightest player, 20-year-old midfielder Ross Barkley, signed to a new contract, tying him to the club for at least four more years.
All of this combined shows Everton’s real aim under current manager Roberto Martinez to push hard for the top-four of the Premier League this year. I believe with this current squad they can once again make Arsenal really sweat, and this could possibly be the year they snatch it away from them.
