Liverpool Have a Star in Raheem Sterling

Brad Penner – USA TODAY Sports

Liverpool played Manchester City recently in a preseason game at the Yankees Stadium. The game flowed at a pace that normally suggests a game in the Premier League. In the early half of the game Manchester City was dominant and controlled the game at a pace which showed exactly why are the current champions of England. The game was a clear indication of what we could expect come August.

The game was full of excitement, thrills and twist. The most exciting thing though was the introduction of Raheem Sterling in the second half. The young England international played like he was an experienced veteran. His pace was electric and he ran at the defenders all night. Sterling looked like a player that had been transformed after his dismal showing at the World Cup. Sterling made clinical passes and pulled defenders wide while allowing other players to run in on the ball. He was involved in the two goals, setting up one and scoring the other.

Liverpool have a sure star on their hands. Even though at times the team look lost with Manchester City, its quick fluid passing was sturdy and confident when Sterling got on the ball. The player, who was born in Jamaica, has been followed through the ranks of Liverpool by many clubs and was one of the driving forces behind the last-minute surge to the title last season.

Now that Liverpool are back in the Champions League after missing it for five seasons, Sterling can be sure to play among the best in the world and show others why Liverpool have a gem on their hands. Sterling is quite young and has much more to learn but he is definitely someone to watch out for. I would even go on to predict he’ll be the Young Player of the Season for the 2014/15 Premier League.
