The beautiful game has given us its share of excitement and brilliance. However, soccer has its share of ugliness, as players indulge in the “dark arts” or dumb antics on and off the field. Here is a list of players who have made the headlines for the wrong reasons.

In January 2011, Pennant's Porsche with its personalized number plate was found abandoned in Zaragoza, Spain with five months’ worth of parking tickets. When questioned about the vehicle Pennant simply stated that he forgot he owned the car. The keys were left on the passenger seat.

Barton’s career has been littered with controversy. The Queens Park Ranger midfielder is an admitted alcoholic and has been convicted of violent conduct twice. On one occasion Barton put out a cigar in Jamie Tandy’s eye, giving him permanent scarring in his eye.

3. John Terry

The Chelsea captain is considered by many to be one of the best defenders of his generation. Terry is on this list for a four month affair with his teammate’s girlfriend, which would see him stripped of the England captaincy. The former England captain was also banned for four games for racial slurs and again stripped of his captaincy with the national team.

2. Luis Suarez

Suarez has bitten no fewer than three players. The prolific attacker has also been disciplined for racially abusing Patrice Evra. Incredibly, Suarez will have chalked up 33 games in suspensions since his arrival to Liverpool from Ajax in 2011. That is almost an entire season worth of games missed.

Balotelli set his own house on fire by notoriously shooting fireworks off in his own home. The then Manchester City forward was also disciplined for throwing darts at members of the youth academy.
