With all the signings coming into Anfield this summer, manager Brendan Rodgers needs to continue to improve his squad. One area that needs assistance from what I have seen this preseason is the defensive back line, and one defender in particular who needs to improve is right-back Glen Johnson. Fans and analysts have been critical of Johnson and his form since last season, and fans are calling for a replacement of the long-tenured right-back.

Over the preseason, I have not been impressed with Johnson’s game, and it borders upon lackadaisical. Johnson has been getting burned on the right side plenty of times during the Guinness International Champions Cup, and at times it has seemed as if Johnson did not want to participate in the match. Now that could be because it is a preseason match, but I guess we’ll never know for sure.

Last season, Johnson’s statistics weren’t as bad as many fans believed. He created plenty of offensive chances compared to Jon Flanagan and Calum Chambers, but on the same note, the defense as a whole allowed 51 goals in the Premier League. With those numbers, it’s shocking that Liverpool finished second in the league last season, but the defense was bailed out due to the brilliance of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

The defense is to blame for the collapse at the end of the season, and it must be improved to prevent the same thing from occurring twice. Don’t be surprised if Rodgers unloads Johnson in an attempt to bolster the back line.
