Eliaquim Mangala Addition Could Yield Second Straight Premier League Title For Manchester City
Manchester City can be classified as a team which already boasts a pretty impressive defense. It was because of this that they were able to lift the Premier League trophy last season. The City defense consisted of players such as Joleon Lescott, Matija Nastasic, Vincent Kompany, Micah Richards and the surprise inclusion of Martin Demichelis. After Manchester City made a move for Demichelis, he was scrutinized after performing horribly on some occasions. His transition into the Premier League was not easy as he was more accustomed to the slow paced football played in La Liga.
With Manuel Pellegini believing that his defense needed to be reinforced for a consecutive assault on the title, he went out and picked up the 23-year-old France international Eliaquim Mangala. Mangala started his career at Standard Liege before moving on to Porto FC in the summer of 2011. The defender is known for his strength and composure on the ball, and he has helped Porto FC to the league title twice already.
Pellegrini obviously has a plan to pair him with Kompany and hope that they would go on to form one of the most feared center back duos in the Premier League. Manchester City already has some of the best depth in the league, but with the addition of Mangala, there will be no answer to stopping them. The may signal the end Nastasic’s career, but I feel that the youngster has a lot to prove. If given the chance he can prove to be one of the best young defenders in Europe this season.
