Manchester City Look Weak With Most Starters
Manchester City lost 3-0 against Arsenal in the FA Community Shield just a week before the 2014-15 Premier League finally commences. The scoreline is frightening only because they were so easily dismantled in the first half in every way possible. Clearly, the problem lies within the defense.
The absence of Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis and Vincent Kompany did not help, but playing for a club of this caliber should even bring out the best in the reserve players. The players who started in their place were subpar at best, and it really caused a huge lack in possession building from the back and left them truly susceptible on the counter. For the Premier League champions, this was nothing short of unacceptable.
Luckily for City, they were able to sign one of the most promising young defenders of today, Elaquim Mangala, 23, from FC Porto. He will come in and perhaps start alongside Kompany in place of Demichelis or Matija Nastasic. The Frenchman was a member of the France squad that took part in this summer’s World Cup. However, he did not play a single minute during the entirety of the tournament. Regardless, he is a solid signing that will help his back line and keeper to shut out offenses in every competition they face.
City are going to need to field a perfect back line in every single Premier League game this season if they are to repeat as champions. With the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United all on the hunt for the title, they themselves will have to be something special.
